Positive Reviews

A fun and unusual heritage property

Guests are generally charmed and amazed by the ways in which the historic Addington Prison still looks like the jail it once was, yet now feels like a very comfortable, homey place to stay. The cells are widely described as simple but cosy, with extra blankets and hot water bottles provided for a great night's sleep. Travellers also appreciate practical details such as lots of hooks in the showers, the well-equipped kitchen, and speedy Wi-Fi. The historic 'display' cell and 'mug shot' photo booth are also fun, novel touches that the 'inmates' expect to remember after their release.

Smiling, helpful staff

The reception staff are widely described as friendly, cheerful, and accommodating. Guests are grateful for their assistance with booking travel, and also appreciate their suggestions for sightseeing.

A convenient location near the station

Guests travelling via the area's famous TranzAlpine Railway appreciate that the station is close to this hostel, about 15-20 minutes on foot. South Hagley Park and Ami Stadium are also very close by. While only the most avid walkers consider the city centre to be within a comfortable stroll, all travellers find it quick and easy to get there on the orange line bus, which runs directly past the hostel. Air travellers love that the airport shuttle stop is also easily accessible.

Negative Reviews

A few tight spaces

Travellers often comment that the toilet cubicles in the shared bathroom facilities are so tiny and tight that tall folks find it difficult not to bump their knees against the door. The shared kitchen doesn't have too much extra elbow room, either.
