Costa del Sol: A Nirvana of Spanish Culture

A synonymous destination for travellers across the world, the Costa del Sol is a vibrant region that is situated in the south of Spain. With an enticing Mediterranean climate as its backdrop, the area features a wonderful contrast of historical attractions, modern activities and nature to experience. From spectacular sandy beaches to an energetic, year-round nightlife scene, the Costa del Sol has something for every kind of traveller.

    Destination for Everyone

Travelling as a family? How about with your friends? Perhaps you’re going solo? Whatever your situation or disposition, the Costa del Sol will no doubt have something that will pique your interest. For nature lovers, there is a vast and varied landscape to discover. This is highlighted by things including stunning natural parks and some of the best beaches in Spain. If you have a passion for animals and the like, plenty of attractions – from the Butterfly Park of Benalmádena to Crocodile Park – will grab your attention. In relation to all this, you also have plenty of other family-friendly activities available. Fascinating museums, amusement parks, abundant shopping opportunities – the Costa del Sol has it all for visitors young and old. And if you are seeking a nightlife escapade to remember, the area boasts a thriving selection of places to visit. From lively nightclubs to relaxing beach bars where you can also grab a bite to eat, is populated with venues to drink and party the night away.

    Areas to Visit

Now while the Costa del Sol has numerous areas of interest that are certainly worth your time, there are certain places that should be firmly on the ‘to do’ list. As most travellers will be arriving to the region via its international airport, Malaga is perhaps the ideal area to start. With resorts and high-rise hotels, stimulating attractions, historical sites, and golden sands, it makes sense why some make this convenient city their base for getting around the Costa del Sol. The appealing city of Marbella, which is known as a glamourous resort destination for those with large bank balances, also comes highly recommended. Away from the major cities in the area, there are an assortment of villages and towns to choose from in the Costa del Sol. The fun-filled Benalmádena is a town that sprinkles in a little bit of everything, Nerja features breath-taking views from its seafront promenade, and history overflows from the charming town of Ronda.

    Attraction Highlights

Note, it is essentially impossible to mention every highly-regarded Costa del Sol attraction in a single paragraph. But there are plenty of things to do that deserve the spotlight. This includes the Benalmadena Puerto Marina. Containing copious amounts of restaurants, shops and activities, this attraction has been the recipient of the ‘Best Marina in the World’ award on multiple occasions. For a stroll through preserved history, the Marbella Old Quarter – complete with narrow, picturesque cobblestone streets – is a top pick for many. A landmark many venture to, is the Puente Nuevo Bridge in Ronda, which is perched above a deep gorge and provides stunning views. And if you are searching for a centralised area with lots of popular attractions, Málaga is the place to go. Along with the Automobile and Fashion Museum, Málaga Cathedral and Puerto de Málaga, the Alcazaba – a vital military fortification that was completed in 1063 – is a must-see attraction in the city.

    Annual Festivities

From traditional bullfighting to thousands of fiestas, you will find a vast selection of festivals and events throughout the year in the Costa del Sol. With that said, and alongside smaller celebrations of culture, history and customs, there are a notable collection of annual festivities to get you out your hotel if you’re in the area at the time. As well as many other carnivals that animate the streets with a mix of vibrant colour and sounds, the Carnival of Nerja is one especially worth noting. Taking place each February, this family-friendly carnival throws together elaborate costumes, parades, live music and activities. Yet if you want to experience these celebrations in a more unique style, the Carnival of Flour is arguably the best alternative. Ushering in February’s Alozaina festival, this festival has participants running around and trying to cover each other with flour! Other yearly events in the Costa del Sol to check out include the Semana Santa en Málaga which takes place during Holy Week, and October’s For the Love of Bandits .
