Devon: A Playground of Magnificent Nature and Attractions
With stunning coastlines, bustling cities and an abundance of natural beauty, Devon is a county that has a wealth of things to discover and experience. Want to spend time at family-friendly attractions, including a number of the best beaches in England? Explore awe-inspiring historic sites? Taste award-winning food from some of the most acclaimed restaurants in Europe? Well Devon has all that – and much, much more!
Areas of Devon
As an expansive and developed county in southwest England, it should come as little surprise that Devon boasts a varied choice of areas to visit. North Devon is a popular destination in particular due to, among other things, its nature activities. From here, you can journey to Woolacombe, Saunton and Croyde, which are all best known for their immaculate beaches and picturesque scenery. The oldest and largest town in North Devon is Barnstaple, which features various attractions that appeal to the whole family – although there are too many to list here! As for South Devon, you will find a number of the biggest towns and cities in the county, making it a great area in terms of hotels, shops, restaurants and attractions. Located on the coast, the biggest is Plymouth – a city that has a rich history alongside an assortment of things to see and do. And another place to consider travelling to is Exeter, with the Exeter Cathedral and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum two standout gems provided by Devon.
Can’t Miss Attractions
Now while there are a countless amount of activities and things to see, Devon does contain a select number of “cannot miss” attractions. For example, and as it is generally regarded as one of the very best beaches on the planet, Woolacombe Beach is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy three miles of gloriously golden sand. If you are an animal lover, the Paignton Zoo Environmental Park – with around 2,000 animals and plenty of hands-on activities – is a firm favourite with travellers. Other popular attractions in the same category include the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Berry Head National Nature Reserve and Buckfast Butterfly Farm & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. The Plymouth Hoe, with breath-taking views from one of the best natural harbours on earth, is another point of interest that simply has to be experienced when in the area. Along with the Babbacombe, Torquay is also home to two of the most revered attractions in Devon: Kents Cavern and the Babbacombe Model Village.
From humble eateries to the most exquisite in fine dining, you will never be short of restaurants in Devon to suit your tastes. With that said, there are a select amount of these establishments that deserve to be highlighted. One of which is Gidleigh Park. Doubled up as a luxury hotel, this restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars – making it one of the most admired dining options in the country. Other Devon restaurants adorned with a Michelin star are the refined Elephant Restaurant and Brasserie in Torquay, the relaxed Masons Arms that dates back to the 13th century, and the rustic – yet delightfully tempting – Treby Arms. Away from the heavyweights of gastronomy, did you know that Devon possesses Britain’s oldest bakery? The Jacka Bakery in Plymouth dates back to the early 1600’s, although today it mixes the traditional with the contemporary, ensuring the best of both worlds! Away from food, Devon also has a plethora of drinking holes sprinkled throughout the county – whether you’re in search of a traditional pub or trendy nightclub!
From carnival-style gatherings to intimate shows, festivals and events are a prominent fixture throughout the year in Devon. One of the most high-profile is the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink, which takes place every April and celebrates all things food and drink. Further culinary delights are served at the Plymouth Seafood Festival, Dartmouth Food Festival and North Devon Foodfest. Two of June’s highlights include the Armed Forces Day and Contemporary Craft Festival, and agricultural fun can be had at the Mid-Devon Show in July. You can meet high-profile authors at the Appledore Book Festival and Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, both of which take place in September. And the unique Ottery St Mary – described as the ultimate party for bonfire night – is something you should try and experience, as flaming tar barrels are carried through the street! Music is also something that plays an important part in terms of events in Devon, with major artists appearing at festivals such as MTV Crashes Plymouth, GoldCoast Oceanfest and Beautiful Days.
