Isle of Wight: Discover a Unique and Exhilarating Island
Boasting stunning natural beauty, an assortment of attractions and close to 60 miles of coastline to explore, the Isle of Wight is a unique and charming destination choice for all manner of visitors. Whether you’re looking for a fun-filled family adventure, relaxing weekend away by the beach or just want to take in the world-renowned Isle of Wight Festival, the area has something for everyone. Not to mention that the island – the largest in England and positioned just off the South coast – has its fair share of history, including being a haven for dinosaur enthusiasts.
There’s a reason why the Isle of Wight has been dubbed ‘Dinosaur Island’, and it has nothing to do with the Jurassic Park movies! Known as one of the richest areas in all of Europe for discovered dinosaur remains, over 25 different species’ have been found on the Isle of Wight to date. And as the land continues to erode little by little each year, even more fossils and bones continue to be revealed. To learn more about this aspect of the island, you can visit the Dinosaur Isle museum or take part in one of the organised trips for fossil hunting. But its history doesn’t stop there, and this is evident via many remaining sites that are available to explore. This includes the highly regarded Osbourne House, which was the former retreat for Queen Victoria from 1845, and is now an English Heritage site that features many original features and possessions. Further historic points of interest include the Norman times-era Carisbrooke Castle, St. Catherine’s Lighthouse and Quarr Abbey.
Activities for All
Although it is also a tranquil setting ideal for a peaceful break, the Isle of Wight contains an extensive amount of attractions if you are seeking an exciting and fun-packed trip. To start with, a visit to the beach is essentially mandatory when travelling to the island – and with the largest number of award-winning beaches in all of England, there are plenty to choose from! If you are an animal lover, you’re in luck when residing on the island. Acclaimed attractions such as the Isle of Wight Zoo, Monkey Haven and The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary are all recommended places of interest, while local wildlife roams the island for all to enjoy. And for something a bit out of the ordinary, you could pay a visit to the family-friendly Robin Hill Adventure Park or Wight Karting.
An Island for Music
When it comes to annual events, music is one theme that is prevalent with the island – something that is best evidenced by June’s Isle of Wight Festival. Famously in 1970, the festival attracted approximately 600,000 visitors, which is in the history books as a record attendance figure in the UK for a music concert. While the Isle of Wight Festival doesn’t quite reach those lofty figures these days, it continues to bring over major artists like The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pharrell Williams year after year. Music aficionados will also be pleased to note Acoustic Isle, a February event that features a wide range of local acts, while September’s Bestival is a unique four-day celebration that combines music with various eclectic activities. And music-related events are not all that the Isle of Wight has to offer. How about a scenic stroll via the popular Isle of Wight Walking Festival? Perhaps take part in nautical-themed proceedings at the Festival of the Sea? Or experience Cowes Week, which is the biggest worldwide sailing regatta and dates back to 1826? The Isle of Wight benefits from a large selection of yearly events, so before you book your hotel, make sure to check the calendar to see what is taking place during your planned travels!
A large choice of restaurants can be visited when on the island, although it should be noted that the Isle of Wight is more expansive than it may initially seem – so it is important to note the areas where these eateries are located! As Shanklin is one of the most popular towns on the island due to its numerous hotels and attractions, it is only natural that it also features a healthy selection of dining options. Regarded picks in Shanklin include Pendletons, The Steamer Inn Restaurant and The Happy Haddock. Although if you are a true foodie fanatic, heading on over to Newport is a must. Along with being spoilt for choice in terms of options offered, this town boasts some of the most celebrated restaurants on the Isle of Wight in the form of Thompson’s, Burr’s Restaurant and The Bargeman’s Rest.
