Perhaps the North Island’s greenest town, Cambridge has an air of elegance about it thanks to its tree-lined avenues and the great Waikato River running straight through the centre. For something a little less intense head to Lake Karapiro and try some kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. Another truly unique experience you can enjoy here is a tour of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Hop aboard a boat and drift through the darkness with thousands of illuminated invertebrates dotted over the limestone walls. To get up close and personal to the amazing natural world in NZ, head to Maungakawa scenic reserve, where you’ll see plenty of birds in the exotic trees that have been planted here over the years.
Cambridge lives and breathes cycling, whether it’s a leisurely ride to work, a race around the velodrome, or extreme downhill mountain biking in the woodlands. The world class Avantidrome indoor cycling track in the north of the town was opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2014, becoming the new home of Cycling NZ and cementing the towns ties to the sport. You can book a time slot to ride the velodrome and hire all the equipment there, so why not give it a go. There are also plenty of opportunities for off road mountain biking, particularly at the Te Miro Mountain Bike Park. For something a bit more relaxing, simply hire a bicycle for the day and head out from your hotel to explore the town and beyond, with the Te Awa River Ride being an excellent cycle trail to try out.
