The cathedral, situated between the Avenue Bourguiba and Avenue de France is built in a mix of Byzantine (particularly the dome above the nave), Gothic and North African architectures. Renovated in 1997, it was visited by pope John Paul II in 1998. Masses in French and Italian are still held here, and it is also used for concerts from time to time. The cathedral’s organ is said to be one of the oldest in North Africa.
