Killarney National Park (Killarney, Ireland)

Killarney National Park was established in 1932 and was Ireland’s first National Park. Located in the south west of the country, it was created from the Muckross Estate that was donated to the Irish Government, but since then the park has been expanded several times. It now covers an area of over 102km2 (25,400 acres). The park is of both national and international importance for the wildlife that it supports and it holds the only wild herd of Red Deer in Ireland. This population is largely confined to the Mangerton and Torc mountains and dates back at least 4,000 years. The habitat of the park is varied but includes ancient woodland, bog land, heath and moor. It has the largest remnants of oak and yew forests in Ireland and in 1981 the whole area was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The Purple Mountains are located entirely within the boundaries of the park as are the Lakes of Killarney, Mangerton, Torc, Shehy. There are many different points of access into Killarney National Park and access is free, a visitor centre can be found at Muckross House. This visitor centre receives over 250,000 visitors every year.
