The castle was commissioned by German King Henry I in 922 who wanted to build an imperial palatinate in the town. The Imperial Ladie’s Convent was founded in 936 and existed here until 1802. A male convent was situated in the valley below the sandstone rock on which the complex stands.The castle was extended several times over the centuries; the last addition was made during the 18th century.
