Die Planungen für den Kopfbahnhof Santa Lucia Venedigs gehen bereits auf das Jahr 1924 zurück, seitdem der Architekt Angiolo Mazzoni unzählige Pläne für dessen Bau erstellte. 1934 gewann der Architekt Virgilio Vallot schließlich die Ausschreibung, der Bau wurde aber durch den Minister Benni bis 1936 auf Eis gelegt, der unbedingt dem Fassadenentwurf von Vallot und Mazzoni den Vorzug geben wollte. Schließlich wurde eine endgültige Lösung erst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg 1950 durch den hauseigenen Architekten der FS Paolo Perilli. Heute hat Santa Lucia 87.150 Quadratmeter Fläche. Der Bahnhof hat täglich 82.000 Besucher bei 300 Zügen zu verzeichnen, von denen rund 17 % reine Besucher sind, die nicht mit den Zügen fahren. Die Station bildet dabei das Tor zur Außenwelt und befindet sich direkt im Herzen Venedigs. Erreichbar ist der Bahnhof neben der Anreise mit dem Zug auch per Bus und Wassertaxi. Vom Marco Polo Airport aus verkehrt ein Shuttlebus alle 20 Minuten.
