It is a challenging event, with crews having to contend with three bends, the tide, the flow of the river and the prevailing weather. Including the 2010 race, which Cambridge won, the series results stand at Cambridge 80 wins, Oxford 75 and 1 dead heat (1877). Over the years many traditions have grown up around the event: the issuing of the official challenge by the previous year’s loser, the 1829 gold sovereign used for the toss, the winning cox being thrown in the river. The event attracts large crowds creating a carnival atmosphere, and the race is also televised. Race day is late March or early April, the precise day varying according to the tides. The timing is set for a Saturday afternoon and one hour before high water at Putney.
