Ha'penny Bridge (Dublin, Ireland)

The Ha’penny Bridge, which is generally accepted as a symbol of Dublin, is a pedestrian bridge crossing the River Liffey. Built of cast iron, it replaced a ferry service across the Liffey, which divides the city. It was cast at Coalbrookdale metal works in Shropshire (England), then transported to Dublin. The bridge forms a graceful white arch over the river and is accented by three lamps atop smaller pointed iron arches that span the bridge itself. The Ha’Penny Bridge is located near the heart of central Dublin, near the Temple Bar district, and it has a daily traffic volume of about 27,000 people. The official name of the bridge when it opened in 1816 was the Wellington Bridge, after the First Duke of Wellington who defeated the armies of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. After Irish independence, it became the Liffey Bridge (Droichead na Life in Irish Gaelic). Despite the change of names it has always been popularly known as the Ha’Penny Bridge, after the toll of one half-penny originally charged to pedestrians.
