Hertford College (Oxford, United Kingdom)

Hertford College is one of the constituent colleges of Oxford University. Founded in 1282 as Hart Hall, it is one of 5 colleges dating from the 13th century. The name derives from the original purchaser of the land, Elias de Hertford. After some financial problems in the 18th century it was dissolved and taken over by Magdalen Hall, but thanks to a benefactor it was reconstituted as Hertford College in 1874. The college has over 600 students of whom around 400 are undergraduates. Famous former students include John Donne, Jonathan Swift, Thomas Hobbes, William Tyndale and Evelyn Waugh. It is centrally located in Oxford opposite the Bodleian Library and boasts two well-known architectural features: a casement bridge linking two parts of the college known as the “Bridge of Sighs”, and the spiral stonework on the hall staircase. The college has no official visitor opening times, but visitors can enquire at the college lodge in the afternoons.
