Shantytown (Greymouth, New Zealand)

Shantytown is located in Greymouth, close to Omotumotu Scenic Reserve. Basically, it´s a replica of a town of the 1930s, where some goldminers worked and where there was a sawmill. The foundation was possible because of generous people who worked hard to build Shantytown. There are 30 buildings arranged in this city, which are open to visitors. The visitors may appreciate several attractions, such as a ride in a vintage train, a Chinatown, panning gold, an activity searched specially by kids, as well as an theatre show. It has also a sawmill, where visitors can watch the milling operation. It´s also possible to take several pictures with the clothes and objects of the 1930s, as well as to walk on the various trails around the town. Some of the 30 buildings includes shops such as the Church, the Post Office, Golden Nugget Hotel, BNZ Bank, Carpenters Shop, Fire Station, Butchers Shop, Masonic Lodge, Rewa Hospital, Coronation Hall, King Dick´s Cafe, and others. There is also an education centre, with several programmes. The visitors can also appreciate several displays with original items of goldminers. Shanytown open daily from 8:30am to 5.00pm, except on Christmas Day
