About The Hughenden Boutique Hotel

The Hughenden at Sydney, is a gracious Victorian residence, which is associated with Australia’sfirst philosopher, Barzillai Quaife. It was built by Dr Frederick Harrison Quaife in 1876 and is located on Queen Street at the crossroads of Paddington and Woollahra, inside what is now a conservation area with the largest expanse of Victorian architecture in Australia. The Victorian Italianate Hughenden showcases many of the original grand building features with its black marble fireplaces, servants bells, unique staircase, chandeliers, and Dr Quaife’s initials, still etched in Lombardic script in the glass above the entrance. In the 1870s, Dr Quaife was an important social and political figure in the NSW colony as a founding father of the British Medical Association. After the Quaifes, The Hughenden commenced a chequered history – Masonic Hall, guest house, nurses’ home, a dance hall, and the Riviere Ladies College. In 1990 The Hughenden underwent a transformation from boarding house to hotel, 27 years later the hotel has undergone another transformation to better reflect the era it was built in, offering our guests the boutique charm and first rate service.
