Huka Falls (Taupo, New Zealand)

Huka Falls are located near Taupo on New Zealand’s North Island. Their close proximity to State Highway One makes them a popular tourist attraction in the region. The Huka Falls are the collective name of a group of waterfalls on the Waikato River as it flows out of Lake Taupo. The falls are created by a 15 metre wide narrow gorge that channels the river from its earlier width of over 100 metres. This creates a water flow of over 220,000 litres per second. This narrow gorge was created 26,500 years ago by volcanic activity. The highest vertical fall of water is only 11 metres but there are several falls within a short distance. The Huka Jet Boat is available to take visitors within metres of some of these falls. There are also several viewing platforms available and a footpath that spans the Waikato River.
