Lake Taupo (Taupo, New Zealand)

Lake Taupo is the largest lake (by surface area) in New Zealand and the largest body of freshwater in Australasia. It is situated in the middle of the North Island and covers an area of 616 km2 with a perimeter of 193 km. New Zealand’s longest river, Waikato River flows out of this lake which is fed by a number of different tributaries including the Waikato River (which starts further upstream), the Tauranga-Taupo River and the Tongariro River. The catchment area of Lake Taupo covers almost 3,500 km2. Lake Taupo is a major tourist attraction in the country receiving over 1.2 million visitors every year. Popular activities in the area include hiking, sky-diving, fishing and boat tours. The lake has an exceptionally large population of introduced Brown and Rainbow Trout. The climate of Lake Taupo ranges from 15°C in July to 24°C in July. It is most popular with visitors during mid summer and especially during the Christmas and New Year period.
