Union Square, San Francisco is not only one of the must-see spots for tourists, but it is a common meeting spot for locals as well. Situated in the downtown area, Union Square is known for some of having the best shopping, dining, and arts scene in the city.
The square is easily recognised from the column-like Dewey Monument featuring Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory. It also might look familiar if you’re a fan of Alfred Hitchcock, as the square was used for filming of Vertigo and The Birds.
One of the few things not to miss on a visit here are the cable cars, which run down the west side of Union Square, and the street performers, which are scattered all around the area. During Christmastime, make sure to try out the ice rink.
Union Square Boasts the Best Entertainment and Shopping in San Francisco
You’ll find Union Square full of life at any hour of the day. The surrounding area is said to have a high concentration of luxury and independent boutiques, art galleries, theatres, and beauty salons.
Although Union Square restaurants are tempting, make a stop at one of the outdoor cafes instead. It’s a great opportunity for people watching.
If you step away from the square, you’ll find lots to do. To the north, you’ll find Chinatown, unmissable because of the Dragon’s Gate. A walk to the west will land you in Nob Hill, one of the most affluent areas of the city.
To the south, you’ll find Powell Street Station, the cable car turning point and an up-and-coming retail district. Here, you can catch the BART train to other Bay Area destinations or go shopping at the Westfield Shopping Center. And south of there, past Market Street, is where all the famous San Francisco art galleries and museums are located.
Luxury San Francisco Hotels Near Union Square
The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square is the only hotel located directly on the square. However, there are a number of venues close by.
Grand Hyatt San Francisco is just half a block north of Union Square and is one of the well-known luxury hotels in the city. Designed for both business and leisure travellers, the property features a fitness centre, salon, business facilities, and on-site dining. Make sure to visit the lounge, as it has incredible views of the city’s iconic sight including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
Hotel Union Square is also quite famous, as it is a historic property from the early 1900s. It is the first boutique hotel in San Francisco and still continues to live up to its name by providing spectacular service. In the evenings, they host a drinks reception, which is accompanied by live music.
