Whether you’re visiting Melbourne or Victoria, Wilsons Promontory National Park is worth the extra side trip. You’ll quickly see why Wilsons Prom, as the locals call it, is Victoria’s favourite holiday destination. This massive iconic national park is also mainland Australia’s southernmost point, and is just 200 kilometres outside of Melbourne. It is well-known for its lush natural scenery, wildlife, hiking trails and beaches.
The summers at Wilsons Promontory National Park are never too hot. The average temperature is considered much milder than the surrounding region. From December to March is when you can expect Wilsons Prom weather to be at its warmest. Between May and August is when the park experiences is rainiest period. Given that the beaches are a highlight here, few visitors come during this time.
Wilsons Prom boasts some of the best hiking trails in Australia. There are routes for all skill levels and some are even accessible to strollers. One of the most popular routes is the hike from Tidal River Campground to Squeaky Beach, lasting less than three miles one way. At the end, you’ll be treated with the best beach in the park, nicknamed Squeaky Beach. If you’re wondering where the name comes from, take a stroll along it and you’ll hear the white sand literally squeak under your toes. Another popular trail is the one starting from Telegraph Saddle to the top of Mount Oberon. While it’s said to not be the most scenic route, the view at the end is truly incredible.
Wilsons Prom is home to a variety of animals, including emus, kangaroos and koalas. It is also not unusual to spot whales, dolphins and penguins on the coast. Whether you’re camping or staying at a cabin nearby, its recommended not to leave your food outside unless you want to attract visitors. The area is home to wombats, one of Australia’s iconic animals. Though friendly, they won’t hesitate to steal a snack from you in the middle of the night.

Wilsons Prom camping grounds within the national park itself are only limited to the Tidal River Campground. Although quite expansive, spots are limited, especially in the summer. However, there are other campgrounds and more comfortable accommodation options right outside the park. Yanakie, a district just north of the national park, is where you’ll find the closest hotels, private rentals and cabins. Prom Hill Getaway and Black Cockatoo Cottages are located just a few kilometres away from the park entrance and are cosy options for Wilsons Prom accommodation.
