The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin is a large regional museum presenting displays of artefacts and information about the Territory’s natural history, cultural history (including Aboriginal art), crafts, maritime collections and other subjects related to the area. Permanent exhibitions include the Gallery of Indigenous Art (Aboriginal people comprise a third of the Territory’s population and the best known art styles of native painting originate in the NT), Cyclone Tracy Exhibition (about the catastrophic cyclone that flattened Darwin at Christmas 1974), Sweetheart the crocodile, Southeast Asian Link Gallery, Colin Jack-Hinton Maritime Gallery (a large collection of boats from the region and beyond) and Transformations, an exhibition on the natural history of the area and how geography and climate influenced its flora and fauna. Temporary exhibitions include a recurring Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. The Museum is free to enter and air-conditioned (apart from the boat hangars). There is a cafe with a terrace and a souvenir shop. The Museum is open 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on weekends.
