Champs Elysées (Paris, France)

Champs-Elysées is known in France as the most beautiful avenue in the world and is probably the worlds best known street. It is the most expensive strip of real estate in Europe. The Avenue runs from the Place de la Concorde to the east, where stands the Obelisk of Luxor, two kilometres westwards to the Place Charles de Gaulle, where the famous Arc de Triomphe stands. Some outstanding buildings can be seen down the avenue, such as the Théâtre Marigny or the Grand Palais. It was Marie de Medici in 1616 who first joined the market gardens to Palais des Tuileries, planting trees all along. By 1700, the Champs-Elysées was already a fashionable avenue and in 1828 it became city property. The latest adjustment made was the widening of the side walks in 1994. The Avenue has been the theatre of a number of military parades, including the German troops who in 1940 celebrated the Fall of France, and in 1944, a march of Free French and American forces after the liberation of the city. Since 1860 merchants along the avenue have thrived from the streets reputation. It is still today one of the most visited streets in Europe with its cinemas, cafés and luxury speciality shops.
