The seaside getaway of Golden Beach in subtropical southern Queensland is a great family-friendly destination at any time of year. It offers sandy beaches galore, children’s playgrounds and countless opportunities for fun days out to nearby beauty spots, interesting museums, wildlife habitats and exhilarating attractions. Boasting several beaches on the calm waters of the Pumicestone Passage, which is sheltered from the Coral Sea by a sand spit, Golden Beach is also framed by dramatic scenery and connected to the neighbouring city of Caloundra by a coastal walkway. In the Golden Beach area you can also enjoy fun leisure activities like fishing, cycling, surfing, kayaking, golf and jet-skiing.
There’s Heaps to do in Golden Beach and its Hinterland
Without straying too far from Golden Beach, travellers can enjoy all sorts of days out. The Queensland Air Museum is a top attraction on Golden Beach’s patch. It displays the biggest collection of vintage aircraft in Queensland at Caloundra Aerodrome, where daredevils can also try skydiving for a bird’s eye view of Sunshine Coast. Meanwhile, thrilling rides and rollercoasters await at the Aussie World theme park, which is a 20-minute drive from Golden Beach.
Slightly further afield, lovers of the great outdoors can explore unspoilt Australian landscapes or see koala bears at some of the many national parks around Golden Beach. In fact, the Sunshine Coast region hosts the highest concentration of national parks in Queensland. For a wild time, you could make the 25-minute car journey to Australia Zoo. Operated by the family of the late naturalist Steve Irwin, who was known as the “Crocodile Hunter”, it contains mammals, marsupials and, of course, crocodiles. About 35 minutes’ drive away, foodies will love the Ginger Factory at Yandina. Visitors can learn how ginger is grown, harvested and turned into tasty products, or ride around the grounds on a narrow-gauge railway.
Have a Whale of a Time in Golden Beach
Although Golden Beach makes a fine holiday destination all year round, it’s only during the southern hemisphere winter that one of the region’s natural wonders can be enjoyed. A whale watching cruise from Caloundra is undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences you can have on a trip to Golden Beach. Between May and November humpback whales often frequent the waters off this part of Queensland, and there are several cruise companies offering boat tours to see these amazing mammals in the wild.
