San Carlo Opera House (Naples, Italy)

The Teatro di San Carlo is a World Heritage site and the oldest European working theatre, dating from 1737 at which time it had 3300 seats. After destruction by a fire in 1816 the theatre was rebuilt and inaugurated on 12 January 1817 with 1,444 seats. An orchestra pit was added in 1872 and, subsequent to being bombed during World War II, it re-opened on 16 December 1943. Since 1999 it is a private non-profit foundation which is involved with training projects. The Teatro di San Carlo hosts regular ballets, operas and concerts and guided tours are available daily from 09h00 to 19h00.
