Cairns Tropical Zoo (Cairns, Australia)

Cairns Tropical Zoo is located approximately 20 minutes drive north of the city of Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway. The zoo showcases both local and international fauna including local favourites such as koalas, wallabies, wombats and cassowaries as well as Nepalese red pandas and ring tailed lemurs. The zoo has a programme of organised events which run throughout the day including talks about some of the animals (for example comparing the physical features of wombats and koalas) and feeding sessions. Visitors can pay to ‘Cuddle a Koala’, buy food bags to feed the wallabies or just enjoy wandering amongst the gardens and displays. There are places to buy food and drinks and even a wedding chapel for civil marriage ceremonies and there is a gift shop. Local bus services stop outside the door and take 45 minutes to 1 hour from the centre of Cairns. For those with their own transport there is a large car park. Entrance fees are AU$32 (€18) for adults and AU$16 (€9) for children. Opening hours are 8:30 to 16:30 daily except Christmas day.
