The Mint (Sydney, Australia)

The Mint on Macquarrie Street was the first branch of the Royal Mint (i.e. the British Mint) to be established outside London and was set up when the gold-rush of the mid 19th Century in Australia made it necessary to have a system to control bullion. The Mint was located in the south wing of the so-called Rum Hospital and turned gold into bullion and coinage. Today the Mint building is home to the city’s Historic Houses Trust and has a library & research collection, as well as exhibits relating to the Mint’s past. There is a café and rooms which can be hired for private functions. Limited parts of the Mint are open to the public but there is no charge to visit. Entrance times are Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00. The Mint is closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day.
